Get in touchYour COโ footprint shows how many greenhouse gases you cause each year from your energy consumption, transport, food and purchases. Most of your COโ emissions usually come from the energy you use in your home: gas and electricity. The more efficient and greener your energy consumption, the smaller your footprint.
You calculate your emissions by looking at your energy consumption. The arithmetic is simple:
COโ emissions = (gas consumption ร 1.8) + (electricity consumption ร 0.4)
For example, if you use 1,240 mยณ of gas and 2,740 kWh of electricity per year, you end up with about 3,328 kilos of COโ per year. That is only for energy consumption in the home.
An average Dutch household (2.2 people) emits about 3,300 kg COโ from energy use. If you add transport, food and purchases, that adds up to over 8,000 kilos of COโ per year.
Solar panels provide COโ-free electricity. Every kWh you generate and consume yourself saves around 400 grams of COโ. If you use 2,740 kWh per year and cover most of that with your own panels, you save up to 1,000 kilos of COโ per year.
If you use the generated power directly yourself (e.g. during the day), then you benefit maximally. The power you feed back contains more COโ on average, because it is often bought back in the evening from a more polluting mix.
A home battery ensures that you use more of your own solar energy instead of power from the grid. That way, you need to buy less grey power. This can reduce your annual carbon emissions by hundreds of kilos, depending on your energy consumption and battery capacity.
Besides saving on energy, you can also pay attention to other habits. Some tips:
