Shift to Solar installs home batteries throughout the Netherlands. Whether you live in a big city or a smaller town, we will help you choose and install a home battery that suits your situation. On this page you will find an overview of the regions and places where we operate.
A home battery is relevant everywhere in the Netherlands. The net-metering scheme stops completely from 1 January 2027 and the power grid is becoming overloaded in more and more places. This applies to big cities like Amsterdam and Rotterdam, but also to municipalities like Ermelo, Putten or Hardenberg. By storing self-generated solar power in a home battery, you use more of your own energy and are less dependent on the grid.
The power grid in the Netherlands is unevenly loaded. In some provinces, the grid is already at maximum capacity, making new connections more difficult or putting pressure on feed-in tariffs. In other areas, there is still room, but demand is growing rapidly. These regional differences make it extra valuable to learn about the situation in your area.
On our local pages you can read more about the power grid in your municipality, what that means for solar panels and storage, and how Shift to Solar can help you with that. On each page, you will also find a calculation tool to help you calculate the ideal capacity of a home battery for your home.
Flevoland is one of the provinces where the power grid is under the most pressure. Grid operator Liander and TenneT warned in early 2026 that new connections in parts of Flevoland are becoming increasingly difficult. This is precisely where a home battery helps to make smart use of self-generated energy.
In Overijssel, too, the electricity grid is fully occupied in many places. In cities like Zwolle and Enschede, more space is not expected to be structurally available until after 2030. A home battery offers homeowners in this province the opportunity to become more independent from the grid.
Gelderland is among the provinces where grid congestion is felt the most. In early 2026, Gelderland, Flevoland and Utrecht were even threatened with a complete connection stop. Grid operator Liander is investing heavily, but the expected solutions will not be ready until around 2033. All the more reason for homeowners to get a grip on their own energy consumption now.
Utrecht province falls under the same grid area as Gelderland and Flevoland, where TenneT issued a warning of a connection freeze in early 2026. The growing demand for power combined with the energy transition makes own energy storage increasingly relevant.
In North Holland, pressure on the electricity grid is increasing, especially around Amsterdam and the North Sea Canal area. Demand for power is rising faster than the grid can be expanded, making smart use of own generation increasingly important.
Almost the entire province of South Holland faces grid congestion for off-take. A late 2025 survey found that congestion problems in the northern part of the province are structural and expected to persist until 2034. A home battery helps homeowners harness more of their own solar power.
North Brabant is one of the provinces with the most power grid bottlenecks. In areas around Eindhoven, Den Bosch and Tilburg, the grid is actually overloaded in places. Grid operator Enexis is investing in extensions, but waiting lists are long. Own energy storage helps to be less dependent on grid capacity.
In the north of the country, grid problems are particularly visible in feed-in. Grid operator Enexis and TenneT are working on new high-voltage substations, but waiting lists for both feed-in and offtake remain for the time being. Storing self-generated power in a home battery is a practical way to deal with this.
In Friesland, the number of solar panels on homes is growing steadily. As a result, the power grid is under increasing pressure here too, especially on sunny days when many households feed power back at the same time. A home battery helps to absorb that peak moment.
In Limburg, several municipalities are struggling with grid congestion, both for off-take and feed-in. The Parkstad municipalities were the first in the Netherlands to sign an agreement with Enexis to speed up the expansion of the low- and medium-voltage grid. Still, the power grid remains tight in many places, making own energy storage extra valuable.
Demand for home batteries is also growing in Zeeland. With increasing pressure on the grid, home storage of solar power is a smart choice.
